When is the noise the loudest? On the throttle, off the throttle, left sweeping turn, right sweeping turn?

Re: 65'chevy rearend roaring Sign In

this is a stupid idea, but if the car is that bad I don't imagine the tires are gems either. Try either rotating them or better yet bolt some different ones in good shape up the the rear end and take it for a spin. I've seen crap tires make a car sound like it was about to fly apart. Also try jacking it up and when in neutral grab at the pinion yoke and check for play. And have you checked the lube level yet? You can't take a car thats been sitting for years and just head down the road when you get the engine to fire. Much more needs to get checked out and replaced.
