The Mitsubishi i MiEV SPORT – Now Electric Goes Sporty!

Mitsubishi has just unveiled an electric car and it is going to probably be the most looked-at model in the Tokyo Motor Show this October in Chiba City.

A car that is an electric model but runs on solar and wind power as well and is sporty to boot.

It can go up to a speed of 180 km/hr, which makes the concept of an electric zero-emission vehicle very interesting indeed. So it is really a bringing together of environmental consciousness and an exhilarating drive.

Let’s take a look at the appearance first. The styling is smooth and flowing and it has a fastback exterior design. With its metallic looks it really does look quite a car for the future.

The paint is almost pearlescent and shines bright in strong light. Inside, it is spacious yet simple. The lightning inside is excellent, with lots of blue LEDs giving it a hi-tech sophisticated atmosphere.

Under its long wheelbase platform is housed the high-capacity lithium-ion battery while the motor and the inverter are under the luggage area. This really makes for ideal weight distribution throughout the vehicle and it ensures better looks and better performance as well as stability. Thanks to aluminum being used for the frames, the car is strong yet light which also helps to improve its performance.

Today’s high capacity batteries have opened up the possibilities of faster electric vehicles. The i MiEV Sport has a 20kW power output in front and at the rear it is 47kW. The torque can go up to 250 Nm in front and 180 Nm at the rear.

The motor output can be controlled for all four wheels so it really qualifies for an all wheel drive! This also adds to the stability as well as the maneuverability factors. With its solar roof and a front grill with wind turbines, the vehicle makes for very pleasurable driving.

The whole car is designed to be energy-efficient. It has a power-generating fan which is just inside the front grill, a photovoltaic generator on its roof and braking functions which are regenerative.

LED's make up a lot of the lighting inside as well as for some of the rear lamps. The glass on the windows and screens is heat absorbing so that helps in making the air-conditioning work more efficiently. And plant-based resin or green plastic is used wherever possible.
