Learn How to Stay Safe on the Road Expert Tips from NASCAR’s Ryan Newman

(ARA) – When he’s rounding the track at speeds approaching 200 miles per hour, the last thing Ryan Newman wants is for something to wrong. Safety is his number one concern every time he races in NASCAR’s elite series.

“And it should be yours too,” says Newman “While drivers on the morning commute don’t have 775 horsepower engines under their hoods, and aren’t drafting in a pack of 20 or more cars, unexpected events can have dire consequences.”

Over the years, Newman has been in more crashes than he cares to remember. He walked away from most of them without a scratch, but because he knows what can go wrong, with the backing of the Alltel Wireless Racing Team, he’s on a mission to spread the word about the importance of safe driving.

“On the track, it is my job to know every detail about the drivers around me, as well as the ins-and-outs of the track on each particular weekend. It is no less important for everyday drivers to be aware of what’s happening around them as they drive to work or transport their families to dinner,” he says.

When people ask him how to stay safe on the road, Newman offers the following advice:

* Bring a wireless phone with you so you can call for help in case you run into trouble. Be sure it’s equipped with a hands-free device if you plan to use it while driving.

* Always buckle up no matter how far you’re traveling.

* Don’t leave home without an emergency kit with you in case you run into trouble.

* Always carry a spare tire, a jack and a set of jumper cables in your trunk.

“The message Alltel Wireless and I hope to get across is simple -- we share a concern for your safety on the road and we hope that the next time you sit behind the wheel, you’ll make sure you have all your bases covered. Safety is your most important call,” says Newman.
