Keeping Kids Entertained During Long Road Trips

(NAPSI)-Nothing spells summer fun like packing the family into the car and venturing off for a memorable road trip.

In fact, according to a recent AOL Travel survey, 60 percent of families plan on driving more than six hours to reach their summer vacation destinations this year.

An extensive road trip with young children can be an adventure in itself, so here are some helpful tips to make even the longest road trips seem short:

• Traveling Toy Box

When packing, let each child choose toys to take along and pack them in a small basket or box. Keep it simple-pack portable toys that are easy to carry and don't have too many small pieces. Include books and drawing boards, such as the Doodle Pro™ Travel from Fisher-Price.

• Family Fun

Create interactive games and activities for the entire family to share. Sing songs, play "road games" such as license-plate spotting or I spy. Don't forget to bring MP3 players, like the Fisher-Price FP3 Player loaded with music and audio books, so your kids can listen to them individually or share with the whole family.

• Movie Time

Since daylight is short during the holiday season, you may find yourself driving in the late afternoon or early evening when it's too dark for kids to take in the scenery. One option is to pack some favorite DVDs (or rent some new ones) for on-the-go viewing. If your vehicle doesn't have a DVD player, don't worry; there are models made just for kids. For instance, the new Fisher-Price® Kid-Tough Portable DVD Player is tough enough and easy enough to withstand rugged preschool use. In addition to kid-friendly DVD controls, it features a 3.2-inch color screen, rechargeable batteries and a battery charger with a wall power unit.

An On-the-Go Travel Kit, sold separately, includes kid-sized headphones, a car charger cord, dual headphone splitter and audio/video cables that allow parents to connect the DVD Player to any TV.

• 3rd Hour Stretch

Allow some time in the travel schedule to let the kids move around a bit. At every gas stop, encourage them to stretch their legs. At lunchtime, take a quick walk together. If there's a scenic spot, stop and savor it by letting your aspiring photographers take pictures.

The award-winning Fisher-Price® Kid-Tough® Digital Camera features cool new styling, a 1.5-inch LCD color viewing screen for instant image viewing or deletion, and 1.3-megapixel resolution for quality 4x6-inch prints. The tough, rubberized outer shell helps protect the camera and screen from damage if dropped or knocked around. Best of all, it's waterproof, ensuring it can survive a drop in a puddle or pool.
