Tips To Keep Pets Healthy, Happy At Home And On The Road

(NAPSI)-Everyone loves warm weather-including pets-and a few seasonal precautions can help keep pets happy and healthy at home and on family vacations:

At Home

• Plan a daily exercise routine for your dog, starting with a short walk and gradually increasing the distance. If you have a pet with health issues, ask your vet for exercise recommendations.

• Get out and play with your dog. There are so many innovative toys on the market, like the Hartz® Dental™ Chew 'n Clean® Deli Cuts™ Dog Toy, which looks like real pieces of meat. Chewing the textured surfaces helps remove tartar and plaque.

• Provide lots of fresh water to help prevent dehydration. The Hartz® At Play™ HChewO™ Dog Toy provides a refreshing chewing experience when water trickles through the tiny holes as dogs chew on it. This makes it an ideal outdoor summer toy.

• Some indoor cats like to enjoy cool breezes on windowsills. Make sure the screen is secure. Consider a screen guard for added security.

• Warm weather is a great time to wash furry friends-to improve their appearance and reduce allergens in the house. Hartz® Living™ Infusions™ Skin & Coat Shampoos relieve dry skin and restore shine. Use lukewarm water and rinse thoroughly.

Taking The Pet On Vacation

• Dogs and cats need to be secured properly in the car. Consider keeping the pet in a crate if it's a long trip. For large dogs, you can use a special harness that attaches to your vehicle's seat belt.

• Experts caution against letting dogs ride with their heads out the window of a moving vehicle. Air currents can cause inner ear damage.

• Never leave a pet inside a car for more than a few minutes in warm weather.

• Decrease the risk of car sickness by not feeding pets right before you leave.

• Bring along water plus small toys and treats to keep Rover busy as some get anxious in the car. Hartz® At Play™ Grumblers™ Dog Toys "speak" when chewed.

• When planning hotel stays, check to see if they have pet-friendly policies.

Smaller Pets: Home Alone

Leaving your fish behind is no problem with Wardley® week-end and vacation feeders. They slowly dissolve to meet the nutritional needs of your fish while you are away. Make sure the cage for a gerbil or hamster is in a cool place away from direct sunlight and has extra food, water bottles, chew toys and automatic feeders.

Exercise is important so get out and play with your pet.
