Mechanic told me i have a blown head gasket

Yesterday i had a mechanic come over and change the serpentine belt and valve cover for my engine, it had been leaking oil previously and that cause the belt to slip off which subsequently caused my engine to overheat. I was only 5 minutes away from home so i drove back stopping every time it overheated. He was doing some tests by running the engine at 4rpm to check if the coolant system was working, the coolant boiled every time, so he told me the head gasket was blown. Today i ran some tests but i bled the radiator and added more coolant, and closed the cap. The temperature gauge on the dashboard wouldn’t go past the middle, and the coolant seemed to be normal until i opened it and it boiled out, is that normal? Also my radiator fan is not kicking in during this test

He may or may not be right. It sounds like he may have jumped to conclusions or maybe something more devious.

He knows or should know that water boils at a lower temperature when it's not under pressure and having air pockets makes it happen quicker. You can't run these cars with the cap off.

Time will tell. Some bad head gaskets very slowly consume coolant so the problem doesn't show right away.

Sorry you drove it at all. I'll try a neat picture of what a head gasket is really doing in most any engine that's liquid cooled AND pressure lubricated.

Hope it shows>>

It's sealing EVERYTHING meaning so you have compression, oil can pass thru, coolant separated and pressure of combustion from one cylinder to another.
Diagnosis is my least fav without clearly demonstrating it is in fact leaking.
It could have been the oil leak but doubt that for now is not out of the question if valve cover leaked or was just soaked where it shouldn't be?
Watch ALL fluids for leaks not just coolant and keep it a mix it needs it.
Belt of rubber would eventually fail from oil you didn't say what this is to help.
Hope that pic shows it's priceless,

T
