I am new to this forum. I haven't figured out how to start a new thread. I was diagnosing a rough idle on a 2007 Ford Edge. Long story short. the car had a code for the Coil E circuit. I swapped cylinder 5 and 6 coils. I wanted to use my bi-directional scan tool to turn off the fuel injectors to see if the problem moved with the coils. But the scan tool said the security was active and it wouldn't let me do anything that involved Bi-directional controls. I have never seen that before. is there a way around that? do i need a higher end scan tool? is there something wrong with the ECM? I have already determined that the problem is either with the ECM or the wire that comes from the ECM and goes to Coil E. I had to unplug the fuel injector connector because I couldn't turn the,m off with my scan tool

I moved your response and created a thread for it. Starting a new thread is much easier than what you are trying to do with that car.

In my experience I haven't seen a scan tool operation that allows disabling a single injector. I don't understand why you're trying to do that anyway.

You swapped the coils so now just clear the code and run it until the code sets again and see if it moved.

switching coils is good practice, for instance i have 2 cars with Coil on plugs for each spark plug. If I get a Check engine light and it's for a misfire for say Cylinder 4. I swap 4 coil on plug with 3 and like HT says clear the code, if the code now moves to cylinder 3 it's the coil on plug, if it stays at 4, it's the spark plug 0r something worse with cylinder 4.
