UGH! 93 Ford Escort Wheel Bearing Sign In

Seriously, almost $80 for the front wheel bearings??? And then I have to find and pay someone who can press them in (in a town where I know zilch people) for me. SIGH << LOUDER SIGH >>

SO, how would one go about doing something like this on their own when they don't have the proper equipment and only have the strength of a girl? Is there a super secret trick or something? The wheel bearings are BADbadBAD and LOUD, so I have to figure this one out pretty quick.

Yes, those bearings are a pain. I would rather just get a whole hub assembly. What you can do is take off the hub assemblies, get the new bearings, and take them to a machine shop or repair shop to have them pressed in for you. It cannot be done without a hydraulic press. Every one of us here has one in our shop and has had to do it. But the charge won't be a lot since you'd be doing all the work except pressing them out and in. I wouldn't wait on this, those bad bearings can make you lose a wheel. If it makes you feel better, a friend had to put new bearings on his Dodge truck. They were $360 each. Hang in there hon, you'll make it. Just call around to a few places and see what they would charge if you bring them the hubs to have the bearings pressed in.

You will need a press, but you can remove the knuckle and bring it have it done for you.

1. jack & support car
2. remove wheel
3. Remove calliper and bracket assembly and support
4. remove rotor
5. remove axle nut and push cv axle with punch untill it moves
6. take off outer tie rod
7. Seperate balljoint (may take 2 people)
8. unbolt knuckle from strut and then knuckle it should be free

special tools needed:
Axle nut socket
punch
chisel
good hammer
Large pry bar

Tips: take nut off tie rod and hit knuckle with hammer to release tie rod end(try not to damage threads). Take bottom nut and bolt out of balljoint use large chisel to spread open and use pry bar pushing down to release ball joint. Might need a new rotor depending how rusted to the hub it is.

Hope this helps!!

Okay, I'm back in the repair mode. I got bit on my right hand by a dog and its taken quite a while to heal - so everybody send positive energy my way! I also have a question that maybe someone can answer: Is the transmission cooled by the radiator too?

Yes, there is a trans oil cooler built into the radiator, assuming it's an automatic.

Then no, it has no external cooling.

Re: UGH! 93 Ford Escort Wheel Bearing Sign In

thank you for the info! the escort is still overheating a bit so I'm thinkin' it might be the water pump. Although,........ maybe you can answer this - does a thermostat provide water pressure as well as regulation? Someone told me some cars run hotter without a thermostat than with because of that?? fact or myth???

Re: UGH! 93 Ford Escort Wheel Bearing Sign In

A thermostat is simply a door that stops and starts water circulation in the engine.

It is true that a car can run hotter without a thermostat but not for that reason. The reason would be that the water flows too fast and doesn't stay in the radiator long enough to cool down before returning to the engine. You just lose all control of temperature without a thermostat. An engine that is too cold is just as bad as an engine that's too hot.

Re: UGH! 93 Ford Escort Wheel Bearing Sign In

Thank you for clarifying that for me! Against my wishes the thermostat was removed and it has really been bothering me. I'm of the mindset if I am going to do something I am going to do it right. So My 1st job (now that I have my right hand back) will be to reinstall the thermostat. Lucky me, its a total pain.... but at least I know what I'm doing this time - I had just installed the new one a week before I got bit :-)

Re: Thermostats Sign In

Dana:

It is well misundertood what they are. They open when at the set temp but not a wide hole that would just make a water pump blow coolant thru way too much.

Just to bore you on the concept: Water pump is always working if only to keep internal temps of the engine uniform which is critical to not warp it. Any vehicle less then ones with wooden wheels need this as the engine is making controls work according to a known temp which is near the thermotat.

Just let it be that engines as we know them need the dang things,

T
