Take a test light and touch the heavy cable bolted to the back of the alternator. If the light is bright, next unplug the small regulator plug from alternator. Key on engine off. Touch test light to red wire. Test light should glow bright. Touch light to next wire. The dash indicator should come on. If wiring tests OK take test light from Battery + and touch alternator case. If light glows bright, replace alternator. I have had many remanufactured alternators be junk right out of the box. Post back and let us know.

Does this behave when you are driving but discharges over a period of time? If so check for a drain which should only be one circuit, T

Maybe if we start from the beginning we’ll be able to help you figure this out. What I would like you to do is take a voltage reading at the battery without the engine running; this is of course after you’ve had the battery charged and tested making sure that it is still in good condition. Next would be to start the engine and take a second voltage reading at the battery. With the engine running the voltage should increase by 2 to 3 volts with in the first 15 to 20 seconds. Does it? Here’s a typical wiring diagram for an 89 Cavalier. It’s showing two fusible links down at the starter; there may only be one having the two different sized Black/red wires. Both wires should have battery voltage on them regardless of ignition switch position. Hook your finger around these fuse links and give them a fairly hard pull. I’ve seen fusible links burn out but leave the insulation in tact; allowing them too visually look ok but open electrically. The Brown/white wire feeds the field circuit of the alternator; it’s protected by either a 10amp or 20 amp fuse (depending on what style of dash your car has) It should have source voltage (battery) on it when the ignition is in the run position. The last circuit is the warning system (again depending on the dash configuration). The brown wire should show power when disconnected from the alternator while using a test light, that’s with the ignition switch in any position other then off. A quick easy way to check the warning system (if your dash as a warning light) Is to leave everything connected; turn on the ignition engine off; you should have the warning light on. If so you can forget it, it’s working. If its not coming on disconnect the connector that houses the brown wire at the alternator and take the brown wire only to ground; the dash light should come on. If the light comes on while the brown wire is connected to ground then the problem is still in the alternator. Some GM alternators need this warning light to function to kind of jump-start the alternator to get it charging. Hope I didn’t add to the confusion if so tell me where I lost you. Dan. Canadian "EH"
