3000gt timing belt Sign In

I am putting a timing belt on a 3000gt.I usually start at the back two cams and work my way up to the two in the front. They usually look right but the last one one on the front bank is always off by one tooth. Can someone tell me how to put this thing on right?Do I need to work from back to the front or front to back? And I have to stretch this belt as i'm doing this? I can get the marks to line up!putting the belt on and keeping the mark lined up is the problems!

You always want to start on one side of the tensioner and finish on the other side of it. A trick I use is to get a few of the squeeze type paper clips and use them to hold the belt in place on the pulleys so it doesn't jump while I'm putting it on.

Thanks Hammer! I use those small C-clamps, I tighten each clamp onto a cam as I'm going but when I finally reach the last cam the teeth on the belt don't match the teeth on the last cam! So I have to pull or stretch the belt in order for the teeth to mesh up! (On the last cam) If it does line up the last cam is still a tooth or a half tooth off?If I don't stretch it the belt has so much play in it once tension is applied the cam easily turns making the mark one tooth off even with a c-clamp on it. This is one of those Dohc engines the one that has the timing marks on all four cams and one mark on the crank. So any other Ideas would help I love this car but I moving in Oct.And can't take a non working car with me, I would hate to have to sell it because of a simple T-belt! Thanks again!

As your getting to each gear, put a wrench on the center nut and you can rotate the gear back to get the belt on and then pull it tight with the wrench. If you have clips holding it to the gear, then it won't fall off when you move the wrench to the next gear.

Hey Hammer, Now that I have time to think about it I may have tried somthing like that but useing a socket? Usually when I put the socket on that last cam I just try to tap it a little with my hand to get it to move. I've tried it and the one end cam is always a half tooth past (or before) the mark.when I tap it It's hard to move but it does move back on point.Only now the other three cams have slightly moved a half tooth before the mark? Do you think I should tighten or loosen up the cams to get it to go?

That's why I suggest using a wrench instead. You can steady it in either direction and it won't jump around on you.
Start from the tensioner and work around in a circle pulling each gear tight after the belt is on it to check the marks and then clamp it and move on to the next gear.

Just one quick suggestion since you've said you have done this before on this car....
Put the old belt & new belt back to back, put a white mark on each tooth of the old & new one and then carefully roll the belt by hand all the way around a make sure the marks line back up so you know you have the right belt..........

Re: 3000gt timing belt Sign In

Hey hammertime,I'm starting to think it may be the lifters or the belt? The belt already has like 15,000 miles on it and I have put it on before with no problem.I recently took the Cams off to bleed the lifters.I don't know maybe the belt was use to the pumped up lifters and now that the lifters are bled I need a newer belt? I'm not sure? Also I notice that of the four cams I have two the move pretty easy and two that are a little harder to move?what ever it is the teeth on those cams are not lining up with the ones on that belt? {It's the right belt because I've driven the car with it on it} Thanks a lot!

I can get them to line up ,but the first cam and the third cam look to me to be off by less than a half tooth. Is it possible the car could be in time it just looks off?

I can't vouch for your eyesight but I assure you, they can be lined up.

Just start at the tensioner and work around to loop. Pull each gear tight with the wrench after putting the belt on it to check the marks and then clamp it and move on to the next gear.

Re: 3000gt timing belt Sign In

I thinking the belt looks fine but it may have too much play in it. Don't want to buy a new belt but those teeth come so close, something seems off?
