I have a 2000 Ford Explorer, 4.0 V6, SOHC, with 109,000 mi. 2 weeks ago, my thermostat froze closed. I didn't go as far as overheating that much...got lucky, caught it, and changed it. Truck ran like crap ever since. From the moment I buttoned it up, motor bucks at certain rpms (1600-2100) or when trying to climb a hill or pass another vehicle. I checked the air box/hose, redid all I did when i changed the thermostat, changed the AIC and MAFS. The plugs are new, the oil is new, the throttle body is clean. I just recently got a check engine light, but attribute that to the locking gas cap I just bought....I smell gas. Please help me so I don't go broke. :) Thank you so much for your time.

Have you actually read the stored code? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Yes, the code is an occassional P0442, Evap Sys Leak (small)....that is how it is worded on the OBDII. I started getting that code after I put an aftermarket locking gas cap on. I do get a fuel smell back of the truck. Thank you for your reply and inquiry. :) I appreciate any help I can get.

It sounds like you haven't checked it since this problem started and are assuming it's only the same code.
