I've been having problems with my '99 honda civic dying. I will be driving and everything just dies, and I have to pull over, while power steering is out. I can't accelerate. I have to brake, put it into park, and then turn the key back, and then start it again, and it starts fine. It has done this several times over the past 2 weeks and is frustrating me because I'll be in high traffic when it happens. Often times, I'll be at a stop light and the RPM's go so low it feels like it is going to die also. Does anyone know what could be causing this? (It has been very humid lately as some might thought this was the problem)

I'm going to reply to your thread with a little more information because I believe we may have the same, or a similar, problem.
I drive a 2001 Civic EX manual transmission with about 125,000 miles. A few months ago I started having a problem that happens mostly in the first few miles after I first start my car. Basically what happens is that the gas pedal stops doing anything - I can be cruising along a city street, and then the RPMs start dropping no matter how much I gas I try to give it. Sometimes I may be able to rev it a bit but it keeps dropping. The car doesn't stall, but only because I'm driving manual and I can jam the clutch in. This can also happen when I'm stopped - the light turns green, I hit the gas, but the engine doesn't respond. An instant fix is to turn the ignition key off, then back on, but the problem may come back within a few seconds to minutes. After a few minutes of driving, it basically doesn't happen any more.
After this had been happening for a while, I got a check engine light. I took the car to an AutoZone recently, and they told me that errors were coming from the Oxygen sensor, and that it was a part I could probably replace myself. I've finally got some time this week, and plan to attempt that Wednesday or Thursday morning. Failing that, it'll be going to a mechanic. babyruth828, it sounds like you've got an automatic transmission, but does this sort of sound like what's going on? I'll happily post again in this thread after I see what happens this week.

As promised, I'd follow up with my experience. I visited a Pep Boys and they were able to order the O2 sensor for me in a few hours. I returned, planning to try to install it myself, but in the end just decided to have them to do it. The replacement was very quick, and wouldn't you believe it...the problem has been fixed. I'd highly recommend investigating the O2 sensor as the cause of your problem if you experience problems like this with your car.
