1996 Mercury Grand Marquis Ignition Sign In

I replaced the ignition in my 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis a few months ago.
It has worked fine until today. I could not shut the car off after I started it,
and a tiny gray piece was on the floor mat. I took the ignition out, and it finally shut off.
Do I need to replace the ignition, or can this one be put back together.
There is also a wire with black plastic piece hanging from ignition.

There is a 'sliding rack" type of linkage that connect the ignition lock to the switch that breaks on those. It requires major disassembly of the steering column to replace.

I know about that part, cause it broke on my Ford Crown Vic.
I will check that out today, and see what I need . Thanks.
