Please help. I have a 1999 Toyota Solara SLE V6. Car was running fine. Stopped at a store and when I returned to the car, it did start but there was a very loud squealing noise and I could smell something burning. When releasing my foot off of the gas, the car stalled. I had someone restart the car for me and I could see that the burning smell/smoke was coming from an enclosed rounded part on the left side of the engine just above the alternator belt. Can you please give me an idea of what this could be and how much it might cost to repair??

The squealing noise was the belt slipping. One of the belt driven component has seized up. Remove the belt to determine which one. The A/C compressor is highly suspect.

Thank you so much. Looks like you are absolutley right. Two more questions: Is there a quick fix for this so that I can drive the car until I can get repaired? Do you know what I will need to have replaced and the approximate cost of the repair. I live in Florida.

At this point you haven't even identified the problem component. Whatever it is will have to be repaired to drive it because one belt drives everything.
