2000 Civic Exhaust Leak Sign In

Got a 2000 Civic that has an exhaust leak coming from the front of the car, when you open the hood, you can smell the fumes coming from somewhere around the heat shield of the manifold or lower. I can smell the fumes in the car even without the fan running. There is no oil leaking from anywhere, performance is normal and exhaust sound is normal, not loud in any way. The heat shield near where the oxygen sensor is is pretty beaten up and rotting, but I doubt that that is the source. Any suggestions.

Are you seeing any smoke rising when it's hot?

No smoke, just smell.

It may have a crack in the manifold under the shield but that would be producing far more noise than smell.
