Hi this is my first post. I hope im doing this all right, but I wanted to see if anyone can help me figure out what is wrong with my car. My Pathfinder is not accelerating but reving , however this has only happened a couple times today. Its not when the car is started but after being droven. The first time it happened we were on the highway, had been driving for 20 minutes. my hub was accelerating from 60-70 and suddenly it wouldnt accelerate but the engine revs. When we got to a down hill road, it went right back to normal. Then later tonight he drove to the store and it did it again, he was driving 35 mph and it wouldnt accelerate suddenly. And the engine is reving everytime he hits the gas, yet the pathfinder only will go about 20 mph. I have never had this happen, its a fairly new ride- We got it in June after the tornado, but has been in the shop already- it had a bad alternator, So I had them check everything and they replaced 1 coil, and flushed out our radiator. thats all that has been done since we got it. Thanks for taking the time to read and help out. 2001 Nissan Pathfinder 112k Mileage

Welcome but sorry to say this seems like you'll need a trans overhaul. Engine RPM going up and not accelerating is slipping. That can be low fluid level but they won't last slipping so be prepared. Driving it any more at all IMO is risky that you'll be stuck. Would bet right now if you check the fluid color it's dark and may smell burnt. If a transmission shop you like is close by get it checked out but IMO it smacks of plain being worn out, T

Does the engine feel like it is still coupled to the transmission or does it feel like it isn't shifting to the next gear? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

the transmission fluid is fine. looks good, not burnt, doesnt stink, was a little bit low, but was filled up before we drove it. but no, didnt burn up. so thats a good thing right? maybe not needing to replace the transmission?

Maybe not but as Tom said, you need to have a qualified transmission shop diagnose it before you drive it regularly.

Hey CH - great to see you around. OK - Transmissions are chiefly their own specialty more and more. Retired now so not buying current test equipment anymore but there's a chance on this this that it just can't shift and isn't slipping which would be a killer. If I drove it I would know the difference so rely on your observations posted here. It having good looking fluid is better but not a definite that it's some easier fix vs an internal broken part and I don't know of trans shops willing to take one all apart and not do the right thing which is overhaul all the common wearing parts. Jury is still out till a pro checks this out IMO. Can't tell by this thread if it's really slipping or just gets so far up in RPMs that it feels all wrong and is on the maybe list. Story about them: Twice in vehicles I was driving and serviced myself trans just went pop and it was game over. Both still moved but broke a metal part inside rendering the whole thing un-rebuildable but life was cheaper then for this stuff, T

If it isn't shifting to the next gear, it may have an electrical problem. Having a transmission shop diagnose would be a good idea. Can't really condemn anything until you know what is actually wrong with it. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
