2002 Nissan Altima 2.5 won't crank

Makes clicking sound like its the starter and it won't jump off. Took starter off and had it checked 5 times they said its good. Replaced starter relay and still same.. Have any ideas what to do next?? No codes showing up

Make sure the battery connections are clean and tight. Have the battery tested, if you haven't already. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I figured it would jump off if it was just the battery

Sometimes it won't if the battery is shorted internally. Have the battery tested just to be sure it is good and you have a good power source to do starting system diagnosis if the battery isn't the culprit. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Ok had battery tested. It's ok. Checked terminals they are fine. Decided it could b starter after all and bought new one and that's still not it. Someone said it could b the crank sensor or cam shaft sensor but you would think that wouldn't keep it from turning over. Any ideas what to do next. Thanks

Ok, I'm not there so I'm not sure how you are checking the terminals or what they look like BUT a good idea would be to get a terminal cleaner and clean both the battery & the inside of the cables, get them shiny clean. Find where the neg cable bolts to the block & body and take those apart and clean them.......If you are just "looking" at this stuff you could be bypassing an easy fix......seriously.....spend 10 minutes and take this stuff apart & clean it.... If it still doesn't start, get a voltmeter or test light and check for power on the little wire that snaps onto the starter solenoid. You will need someone to hold the key into the start position while you test for power... Do that & let us know what you find out......no shortcuts....

Ok I took neg cable all the way off and cleaned it with wire brush at all points. Took plug off starter selinoid and am getting power to it. What I can hear clicking is the starter engaging but it's not spinning the motor over.

do you have a multimeter? You need to do a voltage drop test.

Also a another quick check you can do is get a hammer & gently rap on the starter body a few times while a helper is trying to start the engine....

Don't have one but I'm trying to find one. Where would I test it in the wire that plugs in the selinoid? And if its not getting enough what could it b?

Well there is a few things that can cause this problem, a battery not suppling enough power, to much resistance in a cable or ground or a bad starter....... 1st you make sure you are working with a good battery & have clean connections, then you make sure you are getting 12v to the little trigger wire on the solenoid. Then you want to test the cable & grounds to make sure there isn't any voltage drops.. You can rap on the starter to see if it will crank....If hitting the starter gets it to work, this is a strong indicator the problem is in the starter... Just seen your starter post.....You are going to have to track down a multimeter & do some voltage drop testing..... What did you use to test the trigger wire with?

I unplugged it and no click plugged it in and click. I'm gonna go get multi tester.

Yea you are really gonna want to do that..... On test you could do but you need to be real careful is jump 12v to the little connector the trigger wire goes on to. If jumping 12v to the trigger gets the starter to crank, this would be a good indicator that the cables & grounds are in good shape and the problem is on the trigger circuit.... It's tight down there so a fused jumper is a good thing, this way if something accidently touches ground the sparks aren't so bad.......A fuse jumper is just a long piece of wire with a fuse inline as a protecter.....

bypassing is a good test. Just curious, but does this have an aftermarket remote start or alarm system? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Ok I'm getting 12 v at the trigger and I tried jumping it from battery to trigger on selinoid and still just click

Do a voltage drop test with your multimeter. To do the power side, hook one lead up to the positive battery cable and the other end to the battery cable end at the starter. Have someone try to start it and read the meter. Now hook to the battery negative and the other end to the case of the starter where it bolts into the block. Repeat trying to start it and read the meter. What are your results?

On the power side do I put it on the wire going to the trigger?

no. The main terminal. You are measuring the difference between two points of the same wire while the circuit is loaded. That tells you how much energy is being lost on the way to the starter, hence the voltage drop. This will determine if you have interference in the circuit on either the power or ground side.

We can take this slow & start off with the power side....I do have to say that the little voice in my head is still screaming about checking the battery but we'll move on... 1st put the + lead of your voltmeter on the + battery terminal (the round terminal coming out of the battery not the cable end) and the - lead on the battery - terminal. What is the reading? Then + lead on batt + terminal, - lead on the batt + cable end, try to start, what is the reading? The + lead on batt + terminal, - lead on batt terminal on the starter solenoid (not the cable end, the terminal end), try to start the car,,,,,what is the reading?
