Are you using an analog or digital volt meter? What brand and model meter are you using? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

You are probably going to want to use a digital meter....It's best to have exact results....Take the 1st test, this is just a quick general reading to make sure the battery doesn't need a charge. We what to see a static (no loads on) reading of 12.6v , if you are getting 12.0 or in the high 11s I would really suggest getting a different battery..... The other tests, as you can see by DS's excellent art work, is that you are hooking the leads in series on the same wire, this doesn't make sense to some people since you are hooking a positive & negative lead on the same wire, but what you are doing is seeing if there is some unwanted resistance some where in the circuit robbing the power somewhere...In each circuit there is usually only 1 load (something that uses power) and that load will use 100% of the power. So all these point to point tests you are running, you are looking for a zero or close to zero reading. If you get 2, 3, 5, 10v reading, that would indicate a problem and would definitey cause a problem in that circuit.... Another quick gamble you could try would be to cut off the cable ends, clean the wires good and put on new cable ends BUT this isn't a permanent fix, at some point you would want to replace both cables with new ones that have sealed cable ends.....Test 2 is checking for a voltage drop between the battery terminal & cable end.....

It's analog a sperry sp-6a. I'm getting the same reading on the battery as I am doing the voltage drop on pos term to the starter but the meter does not move from neg term to grounded on starter casing

Ok....Just to be clear......The positve/red + lead of the voltmeter goes to the positive (not - terminal) terminal on the battery. The negative/black - lead goes down to the starter and touches on the big terminal end that comes out of the solenoid. It should read zero, you have a helper turn the key. If you are getting reading of 12v, then you have a bad positive battery cable and a big azz voltage drop......

The meter should be set to the 10 volt scale. With the leads off make sure the needle is at zero. If it isn't at zero turn the screw to zero it. If you have a 12 volt drop across the positive battery cable while someone is holding the key in the start position, you have some major resistance in the positive cable. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Think I figured it out yes my voltage drop was actuall 11 at the starter I started drop testing it at all visible locations on the pos terminal and it cranked when I went to a certain spot I guess it jumped it past it thru the meter. I believe I can fix it now if I have any more problems ill let u know. But I thank all of you for helping me I probably never would have figured it out. By the way I'm not an idiot I just play one on tv. Ps it's got a crazy terminal on the pos side is y I didn't fig it out sooner thanks again

Good job on finding the problem, those can be a real PITA sometimes..... I would be tempted to change out both cables, just so I would have to deal with any similar problems with cables...
