Hello. I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer ES (~120k miles) that started acting weird on my way home from work last night. I don't know any technical terms but, it felt like it was underpowered in the sense that it was hard to accelerate and it felt like it was vibrating while I was trying to accelerate. Speeds below 40 seem ok when accelerating although I still feel a little bit of a struggle. Once I hit around 40mph, it seems like I'm still accelerating but the needle doesn't appear to move all that much. Maybe its just a psychological thing? When idling, it will vibrate off and on. And while at idle, I'll keep my foot down on the accelerator up to around 2k rpm and it will feel like its normal for a couple seconds, then it will start to vibrate for a couple seconds (it will keep doing this off and on). It also has a deeper sound to it like there's a leak in the exhaust/intake or something like that. I checked the basics such as the air filter, spark plugs/gaps, and a quick glance under the hood. After visually inspecting it, I figured it had to be internal or electrical. Any thoughts or suggestions as to what I can check out?

Since there are no replies yet, I thought maybe I can try to kick things off a little. At first I thought it could of been a misfire but the shake isn't as violent as when I felt one on a previous car. Could I be wrong in ruling that out? Also, the engine light isn't on. Should I check / replace the fuel filter? From what I understand, these are in the gas tank which is accessible from under the rear seats. Again, this just suddenly happened so I'm not sure if that would be worth looking at.

Are all maintenance items up to date? If the engine is increasing RPM but the car isn't going faster that sounds like a transmission problem, T

Well yes and no. Everything but the transmission has been maintained. By that, I mean the filter/oil is the original (I assume since I bought it at 18k miles). So it could possibly be from the transmission? In that case I'm probably better off having it checked out from someone. But even if it were idle, the transmission could still have that effect on it?

Yes - engine is turning transmission parts just sitting still in neutral so could be problems with the front (side) that attaches to the engine, T
