2006 Chevy Cobalt...losing coolant and odd noises

Hi we have a 2006 Chevy Cobalt. The engine is a 2.2 according to oil change records (hubby is gone and I know nothing about cars). It has around 56,000 miles on it. All of a sudden several things have went wrong with it. I don't know if they are all related or not since I know nothing about cars, but since they started happening around the same time I assumed they were. To start with we started losing coolant. My hubby keeps filling it up. There is no coolant in the oil and none visible on the ground. Then it started running really rough when starting up. The sound it is making sort of reminds me of when we had to change the oxygen sensors in our old van. Then just the other day we started hearing a noise under the passenger side. It sounds like water sloshing around in a tank whenever he has accelerated and then suddenly stops. The check engine light came on around the beginning of all this and whenever we had the mechanic hook it up it said it was a knock sensor. He changed that and a week later it still hasn't done any good. Our check engine light is no longer on, but it still sounds rough, is losing coolant, and the sloshing water sound is still there. If anyone could give me some helpful advice or suggestions it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

This doesn't sound good. If there are no external leaks, running rough, sloshing noise, ect., you should have it checked for a leaky head gasket. Have you noticed a larger than normal amount of steam from the exhaust? Loren SW Washington

Not that we have noticed no. You would think that would be something we couldn't miss, but I can't swear to it. I personally haven't noticed it though and my husband hasn't said anything to me either. The mechanic said something to us about the sloshing noise.....I can't remember exactly what he said but something about air being trapped some where creating the sloshing noise.

I found this about the sloshing noise on another website...... "Sounds like you have trapped air in the cooling system, which has found it's way into the Heater Core in the dash...tyoically you can have the cooling system bled, and the hoses pulled at the Heater Core, in the engine compartment, against the passenger firewall - to help bleed the air out. If this occured immediatly after a cooling system repair, it may bleed out on it's own after some driving."

Exactly. If you are losing coolant, you are going to get air in the system. Have the cooling system checked for exhaust gasses. We just had one in this week that had the same complaint. Upon tear-down, found cracks between the valve seats. No noticable steam, just a loss of coolant. Very little HCs present. Loren SW Washington

Loren- Not to sound stupid....but what are HC's? Thanks for the advice....I will call the mechanic tomorrow and see about checking for exhaust gasses.

I believe Loren was referring to Hydocarbons;HC. They are produced when the fuel is burned inside the cylinders when they fire. They are part of what comes out of your exhaust pipe. If they are excessive for the year, make, model and engine of the various types of vehicles out there it won't pass inspection. The make up of the exhaust(Carbon Monoxide, hydrocarbons, etc) can be used to diagnose problems with the engine I believe.

Thanks for clarifying that JasonT. So the sloshing thing and the coolant could be related and possibly even the rough idleing noise. I think I am getting a better picture of things here. Thanks again Loren and JasonT for your help.

Yes, it would be related. In the possibility that you could have a blown head gasket, you would be getting exhaust into the cooling system as detected by finding HC fumes. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
