Mad Can anyone help me? I have a 2006 PT Cruiser Touring Edtion. The check break light came on. I discovered that the break fluid was low. It needed a full bottle of fluid. Why would this happen if both the pads and shoes are still good? I also checked the calipers and everything is dry. Is there any known problems with the break system?

Brakes; As the brake pads wear, the pistons move inward towards the rotor. The 'space' is taken up with brake fluid. So, it is normal for the fluid level to drop as the pads wear.

To add to Loren's advice. I tis possible the master cylinder is leaking into the power booster. This is a simple check. Just take the bolts out of the master cylinder mounts and move the mster cylinder forward so you can see inside the booster. Or look to see if there is fluid on the rear of the master cylinder. Check Loren's advice first. His answer is more common.
