'97 Dakota difficult starts Sign In

1997 Dodge Dakota 3.9L 6 cyl auto. Recently I have noticed the truck is taking longer to kick over when startung up. What was previously 2-3 seconds it now might take 7-10 seconds to kick over. I replaced the spark plugs, air filter and have put fuel injection cleaner into the tank for the past three fill ups. I have not had a general tune up but the wires were replaced last year and as stated already, new plugs are now in (no change to initial problem).

Can anyone suggest possible ways ahead to straighten this problem out ?

Also, when using my OBD II I keep getting a link error (the OBD works on other vehicles). The OBD is getting power from the 16 pin connector but is unable to do a scan of the computer fault code system. I have checked all applicable fuses. Can anyone provide a way ahead for this one ?

thanks,
Steve

Dakota; How old are the plug wires? Could be that you aren't getting a good enough spark to the plugs? Have you ever had the injectors cleaned? Not the snake oil you put in the tank, but actually cleaned? Try retrieving codes generically. Look at the CTS.

Windstar; Sure sounds like a multi-function switch fault.

Thanks Lorne

The wires were replaced less than 2 years ago, should not be an issue. No, I have not had the fuel injectors cleaned. I'll look into that. Anything else that would cause difficult starts to the Dakota ?

OBD II I do know that I have a PO 783 fault - 3-4 shift malfunction (transmission). I had the filter changed out last year and a general cleaning. The fault reappeared not long afterwards. Any recommendations for that ? btw, not sure how yo generically check the codes ??

Finally, all my posts are preceeded by that damn Windstar post I had put up last year. How do I get rid of that from my current posts ?

You should be able to elimate content of your own posts if you wish. I will show that it was edited with your name and date just like this post just did. I you had posts and weren't signed in I don't think you can mess with them now,
