the gear selector on my 97,3.0, taurus automatic semmed to have alot of play in it, I looked under the dash and where the trans, cable arm pivots seemed to be the problem, there is a bracket there but if something feel out that was supposed to be there I don't know, I wonder if there is an exploded view on line I could check, I don't have a simular vehicle available to look at

What usually happens on those is that the shift tube bushings wear out. You can buy the bushings and drop the column to replace them. Also inspect down where the shifter cable connects and make sure the bracket bolts on the end of the tube are tight. If they are loose put some Locktite on them. When you drop the column make sure that you have the shift indicator cable disconnected. Don't be surprised if the plastic cable bracket breaks. You can buy the indicator with cable pretty cheap.

If the tube is damaged you can get the tube and bushings in a kit.
