I have a 99 taurus wagon that when you first start the vehicle up it idles up high like it should but if you try to put it in drive soon as it starts (cold engine) it bangs. I was thinking transmission or motor mounts. Any ideas would be great. Thanks, Scotty -------------------------------------------------------- Your only as good as your tools!

If the idle speed is still up a bit after starting you may get a harder engagement when shifting into either drive or reverse. Make sure you give the idle a chance to " settle down " before shifting. Also parking on a incline this can put pressure on park pawl making a clunk when putting into drive. If you suspect a mount, should make a clunk noise when cycling from drive to rev. Physically check your mounts for blown out rubber excessive movement. Good luck.

If just parking on a slope as Z mentioned. Again, it just that and the pawl is fighting to release set the parking brake when in Neutral first to hold car - then on to Park and you won't have that problem. If a motor/trans mount and AYOR or don't you can just mildly brake stand with hood open and one or more move too much. STAND TO SIDE OF CAR TO OVSERVE NOT IN FRONT! It could decide to take off and we don't want that. Do forward and reverse or if timid about that let a tech do it in two minutes, T

No, the car is on flat ground when it does it. I've never had a vehicle that you couldn't put in drive 30sec after you start it. I haven't even checked the mounts yet i just wanted to see if you guys thought i would be wasting my time. I've done the power brake test before, I'll try that this weekend. It's my mother's car so I'll have to wait till saturday to do it. Thank you guys your help so far. -------------------------------------------------------- Your only as good as your tools!

Hey zmame, don't those have some liquid filled mounts? It will exaggerate the clunk if the liquid mounts are bad. Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

to be honest I don't know on a Taurus I've never had any problem with them on a Taurus. I know the focus ones are common and they are rubber. I know for sure the rangers have liquid mounts i have ran into bad mounts with them.
