Blown engine after oil pan was replaced Sign In

Took my 2006 Honda Odyssey van with 120,000 on it for a oil change to dealer. They had said before that i would eventually need a new oil pan because heli coil plug was going. Told them to go ahead and do it at a cost of $370. Left dealership and after about 30min of driving the engine oil light came on and motor started to make noise. Took it back to dealer the next day because they had closed. they inspected van and stated that a part of old plug broke off and was sucked into oil pump and engine was blown. They stated that it was nothing that they did. This van was in perfect running condition and drive out of the with a blown engine. Help!!!

I don't buy that story. The oil pick up has a large screen so no single item is going to block it and they would have known better than to install anything that could. It sounds more like somebody screwed up. I would have it towed to another shop for a second opinion before they do anything to disguise the failure.

Hammer Time, thanks for responding. Thats all thats on my mind. Having a meeting with Honda Zone rep. Worried now because its sitting at dealership. Would not put it past them to have done something else to van. They really did something wrong and are going to cover it up. may get a lawyer involved. Why not. Lookin at 5000 now. No 5000 plus 370 for oil pan repair. thanks again.

Having the zone rep should help you. They won't be so quick to make up stories although being a used car, the rep really doesn't have much authority in the situation because it's a local dealer problem and responsibility.
They should have insurance for problems like this though.

Thanks for reply. Well just had meeting with zone rep and he is basically collecting a check. Would not get involved. The service manager stated that it is not in there job procedures to check the screen on the sump. The piece that he presented was the butterfly from the heli coil that he stated blocked the oil flow to the oil pump. Again he stated that they don't have to check screen. My girlfriend is devastated. She still owes for van. Contacted Honda NA and they are passing it on to regional manager. Don't expect much. Waitin for lawyer to call and filed complaint with Attorney General. I will not accept their answer. Why would'nt you check that screen. Anyone else that reads this post tell me why you don't check that screen. Thanks.

You're taking the right course. I wouldn't accept that answer either. I also find it very hard to believe that little piece caused the failure either. You would have had an oil light the second it happened and would have had plenty of time to shut it down before any damage.

Re: Blown engine after oil pan was replaced Sign In

Gary; Wouldn't the piece of the 'old plug' have been lying in the old oil pan when they removed it???? See if you can get your hands on an oil pump with the pickup screen and have them 'explain' how the part got sucked thru the screen, into the pump. This is unbelievable. I used to 'hold' dealers to a higher plateau.
But, since being on this forum, has changed my mind. Really sorry for your troubles. Hopefully, if you make enough noise, someone will listen???

Re: Blown engine after oil pan was replaced Sign In

Hammer Time and Loren thanks for the post. Feel helpless. Lost it with service manager and quit talking to Zone rep. I was calm until I heard his explanation and my girl started crying. There is no logic to their answer. He looked right at me and said he did not have to check screen and that is where the part was supposedly lodged. I won't go away. Filed a complaint with the Attorney Generals office and contacted a lawyer who is going to review case and let me know if we can pursue it thru the courts. Will keep you informed. This stealership has not heard the last from us.

The bottom line here is that if we are to believe his version of events, his repair caused the failure and he is responsible for it, ...period.

Just found out that we can file a complaint with NYS DMV against car repair shops and dealerships. Again this forum is a valuable source of information that helps the public that need it most. She is just a hard working single Mom who's life is turned upside down because of them.

We understand. People in our business get blamed for a lot of things they don't do but bad things can happen occasionally and they just need to own up to it and take care of it.

Re: Blown engine after oil pan was replaced Sign In

Feel I should keep you informed since you took time to respond. Talked to lawyer today. BBB won't make a difference. Attorney General complaint and DMV auto repair bureau will. Once they are done we go to small claims court. After reviewing receipts they did oil change 9-23-10 and took heli coil out and replaced with oversized plug to spec. They were the ones that let the broken piece fall into pan. Important. Still don't see how that piece stopped oil flow to take up tube. There is the screen that comes into play. Loren need you to show up for small claims court. Need a specialist ASE certified. Ha! I will have one with me if I have to.

I would be shocked if they let things get that far. They have insurance so I wouldn't expect them to put up that much of a fight.

Honda regional manager did not step up. We are on our own. Need explanation about oversized plug put in by stealership. They are the ones that swapped heli coil out. Why didn't they know about broken piece in pan?

Re: Blown engine after oil pan was replaced Sign In

I'm not surprised about the Honda manager. He really has no authority in this matter because it's not a factory warranty situation. It's between you and the dealer.

I am surprised at everything here. Not only should that have known there were still pieces in there but using an oversized plug is not something any other dealer would have done. The correct way to repair this problem was a new oil pan and anything else would be considered Mickey Mouse repair and not something I would ever expect a dealer to do. The heli-coil would be acceptable is it was an aluminum pan but not a steel one. The bottom line is that they are the experts and their repair caused the failure and they are responsible for it. If it couldn't be satisfactorily repaired, they should have declined working on it.

Loren. The oil change receipt prior to the oil pan replacement shows that they swapped out the heli coil plug with a part #
Honda Parts > 94109-14000 > ACCORD 4D 94-97 E2/V-6 E2
OEM Honda Accord WASHER, DRAIN PLUG (14MM) I have reciept. Sorry cut and pasting.

Re: Blown engine after oil pan was replaced Sign In

Gary; I agree with Hammer, 100%. I would NEVER use an oversized plug in an oil pan, except in a dire emergency. And, then, I would have a huge disclaimer on the repair order. Are you dealing with a genuine Honda dealership, or a 1930's Flying A gas station that hung out a "Honda" sign? Unsure Hammer and I both, are in awe. I cannot believe that they are putting you through this. Like Hammer said; When we make a mistake (we're only human), we must face up to the mistake and make it right. If it's a BIG mistake, well, that's what we have insurance for. I had a tech that 'reached in' and started a pickup that happened to be a manual trans with the clutch inhibitor switch by-passed. Well, it started, in gear....Did $1700.00 worth of damage. That's what insurance is for. They need to suck it up, swallow their ego, and take care of their customer. Period. Unsure
