Cable hanging under car help :( Sign In

Hey guys. I have a ford KA and today I noticed that a smallish cable/pipe (about an inch in diameter) is hanging from underneath my car. it is connected to the back left wheel and the fixture that it is bolted to seems to have rusted away and detached its self from my car, allowing the cable to hang. There is a similar cable on the back right wheel too but that one seems to be ok.

Anyone know what this cable/pipe is? I have a big drive tomorrow but all the garages are shut and I am now nervous to drive the car incase it falls off and leaves me without brakes or something serious!!!!

The only cable that i am aware of on a chassis is the parking/emergency brake . You should be able to drive it untill you can arrange repairs .EXCEPT .If you are driving a manual tranny and have to park on a incline I would not drive it.

"Inch in diameter!"

That's bigger than any parking brake cable I know of. Don't know these cars for bean but more likely a stabilizer bar but find out and check. Generally those have pins and bushings if done that way and not huge money to repair. Really need to know for sure and take care of it at once,

Good point Tom . But I was thinking along the lines of a cable passing thru a guide tube, IE ,a 45' bend near wheel.

I just don't know RT? One look and we could know what the heck this is. Those stabilizer pins are a real problem here with rusting out and dangling remains whacking around. Better replacements are available and I grease the heck out of them so never a problem again.

One clue would be if parking brake works properly on this car and lever or pedal returns with authority when released.

I don't know if I can Google up a pic of the set up for this car?

That's what I could find out there and yes that could fall down but not the typical pins used like I'm more familiar with. If that substantial a part could rust out my guess this car should be checked out hard for things that rust like fuel and brake lines for starters.

Need to know what year this is might help and if a sport model??
