2000 dodge durango
v8 4.7
100k miles
This has been driving my crazy for a couple of months now..when i try to start my durango it idles real low then shuts off the only way i can get it to stay running is hold the gas pedal down a little to make it idle then after a few minuites it will idle by itself.
I read it could be the catalytic converter so i had it replaced and changed the spark plugs but its still doing it. When i look under the car while it is running i can see a small amount of exhaust fumes comming from just in front of the passenger seat, is this normal?
Previously it would just do this somtimes maybe once or twice a month now its all the time

Bchaffer; Does it do this when it's cold, only? Or even when warm? Any check engine light on? How does it run after it's warm? A catalytic converter won't cause a problem at idle. It would have to be plugged so badly that you'd be having all sorts of problems. If you are having to hold the throttle open to keep it running, it could be overfueling, or the throttle body/IAC are very dirty. The 'fumes' you are 'seeing' is probably an exhaust leak, maybe the gasket at the cat? Most idle quality issues come down to cleaning.

it does it warm or cold...there is no check engine light on. It has gotten somewhat better since i changed the cat but its still idleing bad when i start it. It does it worse when its cold. Also there seems to be alot of smoke coming from the exhaust

also is doesnt smoke all of the time it comes and goes randomly it seems and somtimes it smokes worse than others.

The symptoms sound like it's over fueling. The PCM (O2 sensors) should be picking this up and setting a check engine light and storing a code. That bothers me that it isn't. If the engine is misfiring from lack of fuel or too much fuel, or a secondary problem, that will damage your new cat. You may want to take it to a shop that you trust and leave it overnight so they can hook up to the computer when it's cold, before starting it to see what the computer is seeing. I would recommend not letting this go very long as it can be detrimental to not only the cat, but the engine if it is over fueling.
