I have a general question Sign In

Is it possible for a vehicle sitting on a flat surface with engine idling, to inadvertently slip into gear and move on its own, whether the transmission is manual or automatic?

Could you explain to me your reasoning?

Re: I have a general question Sign In

Not very likely if it is in park for an automatic. There have been cases of vehicles going into gear on some of the old Fords if you had them in neutral. It's possible that if you have worn out shifter linkage you might not get the transmission all the way up into park even though the shifter lever itself is in the park position which could cause the transmission to go into gear.

As for a manual transmission that would be impossible because the clutch would have to be disengaged to get the transmission into gear with the engine running.

Can you give us anymore detail such as the vehicle you are referring to?

Various vehicles. Just a point a few buddies and I were arguing about. Many thanks.
