Powertrain Control Module.. Where is it? Sign In

Hello-
I had a 2006 Kia Rio 1.6L with 77K miles. The automatic transmission is stuck in 3rd gear.
I took it to several repair shops and they could not diagnose the problem.
I took it to a Kia dealer and they said I need a new powertrain control module (PCM).
The Kia dealer quoted me $1,100 to replace the PCM which I think is excessive.

Where is the PCM located on a 2006 Kia Rio?
What difficulties will I run into if I try to replace it myself?
Thanks, Foster Stone

What is the cost of the PCM? The last one I had to estimate for a Kia was $960 just for the part. Most of that repair cost is probably parts.

PCM is located between the firewall and the air filter housing.

You could get a used one from a salvage yard and then have it flashed by the dealer to your vehicle. You just can't slap any old PCM in there, because the programming is unique to each vehicle.
