distributor rotor wear Sign In

In a 2.5 litre plymouth aclaim (or all distributor in general) What shape is the end of the rotor suppossed to be. In the alternator at which i am looking the end that makes the contact is perpincular to the side that is to say it is quite flat on the end . And is this supposed to make direct contact with the four different points or just pass close enough to allow an arc

i believe they are just supposed to have a minimal air gap. just enough so they dont touch.

Now that I have seen a new distributor rotor I can tell you that the end is very slightly curved. In my case general distributor failure was a two fold problem of the rotor end having been corroded and worn and in edition I believe some foreign material which was messing up the hall position sensor( a small sensor under the plastic cover which seperates the chamber in which the rotor spins and the rest of the distributor) had originated from the worn and corroded rotor. This piece of material was essentially just a flake of metal but was enough to somehow short out the whole distributors ability to function. The sensor contains some magnetic portions which make it particularly attractive to metal flake and rusty crap.

That is called a 'Hall Effect' switch. As the distributor turns, the reluctor blades pass through the Hall Effect switch, telling the coil when to fire.
