excess Motor cranking before starting Sign In

04 Dakota Pickup SLT 4.7 L 35Kmiles

Since warmer weather, its taking longer (cranking)
before engine starts.

More so when cold, but also when starting again,
15-45 min time frame (motor still warmed up).

Sometimes I'll crank a few seconds then pump gas a few times
then cranks a bit more then finally starts.
Not really sure that this helps all that much.

Jack; In cold weather, the engine requires more fuel to start. The fuel delivery is determined by the coolant temp sensor telling the computer it's cold out there. As the engine warms, it doesn't need as much to start. It sounds as if it may be too rich (too much fuel being delivered). If you crack the throttle while cranking, does it help? The coolant temp sensor can be tested with an ohmmeter. The resistance values will change as the temperature increases and decreases. We can provide a chart if you want to do that. Pumping the throttle on a fuel injected engine does nothing other than increasing air flow. (should be called an air pedal, not a gas pedal).

Loren,

Thank you,

if you do have a chart for the sensor,
it would be most appreciated.

Thanks
