hi i have a 2001 2.2L 4cyl chevy s10 with about 160000 miles and i have a problem with the shifter. its a 5 speed and the clutch doesnt slip or chatter but it feels loose. it doesnt stay straight and wobbles side to side. still shifts ok tho so i jus wanted to know if its the clutch or somenthing else and if its something i can fix without taking it into the shop m very tight on money so all considerations will be helpful thank you.

If I understood your question properly; it’s the shifter handle that’s loose, not the clutch peddle?
If so there is a shift insulator (#14) that could be worn or broken. This insulator fits into a cup like socket (#7).
I believe you can remove the shift lever (#18) from inside the vehicle after the shifter boot is removed.

oh wow ok!! thank you n yes its the lever. cool. so its not the clutch?? i can fix it by myself??

How can I answer that question; I don’t know what your abilities are.
For example; my brother and I are polar opposites, he’s a carpenter, and I’m a mechanic. I’m retarded with a claw hammer, he’s with a ball peen; we’ve made a pact, he doesn’t try and fix his vehicles; I don’t touch the house.

well i noe basic stuff. ive changed oil, spark plugs, spark wires, ive changed the suspension both front and back... i can do alot if i jus get some instructions or info about it... my family blessed me with a fully loaded craftsman mechanic tool set so tools arent a problem. n well i pretty much always made up my mind to be a mechanic but due some factors its gona take awhile. so if it needs to be done at a shop in ur opinion ill just take it in.

Ok; then yes you may be able to get this done on your own; you don’t have to pull the trans at this point to check it out.
Remove the interior floor shifter boot and then the three or four bolts (#15) and then the shift lever housing should lift out. Check the shift lever insulator (#14) for excessive wear or whether it’s broken/missing.
If all looks OK there then you may need to remove the transmission and then dig in further?
