I took my 2003 Mitsubishi spider eclipse GTS in for rear bumper repair and paint. When I picked it up, the odometer, speedometer both were not working, and it seems to be having transmission problems. Could this type of damage occur while the car is being repaired only, not being driven?

Sounds like it may have a damaged speed sensor or related wiring. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I doubt it. It's at the other end of the car.

I got a quote from auto zone a new transmission is $2,000.00 Do you think it could be something less expensive like speed sensor or related wiring? Could those problems make the transmission drive funny?

If your car has anti-lock brakes, it will have two sensors. A speed sensor located in or onthe transmission that controls the speedo and odometer and an abs speed sensor/s which are located on each wheel. If your repair was at the rear of the car, there is a possibility that a wire may have been knocked loose at the rear abs sensor. this could cause your problem. Hope this helps.

The ABS sensors will have no effect on the speedometer or the transmission shifting so do your homework before giving advice.

Thanks so much for your advice! The Mitsubishi Eclipse is sitting in the parking lot at my office until I get my next paycheck. I am driving a company car for now. I haven't done any diagnostic yet other than here, and I have gotten some quotes on various parts. Since the engine light is on, I may be able to have them read the problem. By the way, the airbag light went on at the same time all this happened, which is odd. Do you know if somehow the airbag is related to the speed sensor? Maybe it is wire nearby?
