truck wont start	Sign In

1999 ford f-250
7.3 turbo deisel
80,000 miles

Last time I used the truck it ran fine. Parked it in my driveway now truck cranks but wont start. I have noticed that the "wait to start" light that has always come on no longer comes on. Could this be my problem and if so what is the fix.

There is a relay and/or a solenoid that supplies voltage to the glow plugs. First, check fuses. I'll see if I can locate those for you and get back.

There is a relay under the hood and a 20A fusable link. Couldn't find a legend showing a fuse, though. The fuse box should have a legend on it. I don't know much about diesels, but I do know that the glow plugs are needed when the engine is cold. And, if the 'wait to start' lamp isn't coming on, they probably aren't working. From the little experience on diesels that I have, it's usually the relay that goes bad.

Closely inspect the wire loom that goes to the glow plugs. I read that they will wear through near where the engine lifting bracket is located and short out, damaging the relay. Also, excessive amp draw from the glow plugs can do the same thing. Check grounds, also. We rent U-Haul trucks on the side. They used to be mainly Ford diesels, and whenever the 'wait to start' light would not illuminate, it was almost always the relay. Thank God, U-Haul has replaced all those with gas engines.
