2001 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L 4-cyl. 99,500 miles Hi folks. Seems like a great forum. I'm having an issue with my Sunfire. The HVAC system works fine, except for one small problem. The system will only blow air on high and med-high settings only. There's 4 blower speeds on the dial, but when you select low or med-low, you get nothing, nada, zip. Speeds three and four work great. I checked all the fuses, not expecting to find a problem but as a starting point, and they're fine. I know there's a couple of relays under the hood by the 50 amp fuses marked "HVAC", but I don't know how to test and see if that's a problem. Or maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way. Any help or direction you can give would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, Don't make me promise but this is usually a "blower motor resistor" failure. Many will fail to just HIGH so I'm doubting it completely for now. I think they can fail in sequence like that and soon you may have just High. Most are located on top of the distribution box (heater/ac box/ductwork) close to the blower motor. Some from inside might be reachable thru a removed glovebox - not certain on this exact car. Pretty much the only other choice is the switch itself but I don't see that as so common, T

Thanks for your input Tom, I was hoping it would be an easier fix so I will probably take it to a local shop soon. Thanks again!

Just to confirm Mr. Greenleaf's theory; I've seen many GM resistors fail on only one or two settings. Not so sure about other manufacturer's though. If you haven't taken it to a shop yet, it's a fairly easy fix with a quarter inch socket set a small light and a bit of patience. A 7/32 open end wrench may also be required for one of the small screws holding the resistor in.
