Any ideas what's wrong with my Honda Jazz? Sign In

I've got it booked with my mechanic but he can't fit me in until next week. I have a 2003/53 plate Honda Jazz S 1.4, 91.000 miles. I'll try and describe in detail as best I can:

When it's stopped in nautral it makes a grinding (like metal on metal) noise with a kind of chugging sound. When I put my foot on the clutch it stops. When it's moving it makes the grinding and chugging noise in low gears and again stops if I put my foot on the clutch. It also has an occasional high pitch screech while moving. It's a lot better when the weather is warm and I would go so far as to say it almost stopped during our heatwave but now it's wet and miserable it's started again. It drives fine though, there's no jumping or anything.

I know the Jazz has a common fault with the gearbox bearings but can anyone advise me if this could be something a bit less worrying?

Thanks in advance for any advice

Seems by description the front bearing to trans is the culprit right now and will just get worse if so. Trouble is by the labor to get at it you would be well advised to just do up all the wearing parts and bearing and throw in a new clutch while there too. Pricey stuff, greatly labor intensive, but could have damaged more already or will at some point,

Thanks so much for your advice. The mechanic I took it to seems to think it's the gearbox bearings so in need of a 2nd had gearbox, I'm not sure whether to get a 2nd opinion or not.

Just slight lingo barrier - you mean transmission for gearbox I take it - no problem. I have no issues with well checked "used" parts like that from reputable sources.

Trouble with used is here you get a warranty that it's good but not for labor to try again if the used one failed.

This might just be bearings which does mean taking it out and apart then you know more about yours vs another unknown.

No problem with second opinions on my part. Have you consulted a transmission shop that concentrates on just transmissions? That's a norm in the US that total trans places just do that and not every other thing on vehicles.

If similar to some places here they have another already waiting and then fix up yours for the next person - sometimes.

If you wait too long I do think yours could be damaged beyond working on it again so time is of the essence IMO,

I've been looking online and some people recommend them so I thought I would ask. That's a shame! Thanks again for your advice.
