transmission/motor

had a new transmission put in yesterday and today the motor went up in smoke. Is there any connection to the two. I am trying to do some research before we talk to the mechanic that put the new transmission in.

You said it went up in smoke?? What do you mean by that? What happened? Lots of things get moved just in the course of working on things and it might be something simple or maybe not involved with other work at all??

I drove it home Saturday evening from the garage and parked it. Sunday afternoon my fiance leaves for work and she is one the interstate with her cruise on 65, and she heard something pop and she said she saw nothing but smoke. I seen that the garage had taken out the motor to replace the front wheel drive transmission. I am not looking for the blame game here, just an opinion. The mechanic that worked on it is going to come look at is tomorrow. After that I am going to get a second Mechanic to come look at it.

I doubt it is something simple, the motor won't even turn over. It is seized up for sure.

I'm glad the mechanic at the shop is coming to look at it. It's a bummer no matter what and probably did generate from the work. Just be calm and state what happend. I trust people and they will know and take care of it for you.
There could be a wild explanation like debris in the road shot up and smashed things and that just happened here big time with bridge metal popping up and a whole line of cars destroyed shown on the news.
It could even be a new part used in the transmission work and both are now junk. This simply has to be looked at in person and figure out what will have to be done now. Bummer

I have some new information. My finance said as she was driving she heard something pop, and she looked down and seen her tach all the way redlined. this to me sounds like since she had the cruise on something broke in the transmission and at 65 the motor took off with no torque coming from the transmission. It will also roll in my driveway in drive like it is in neutral. I really do think something spun in the transmisson causing the engine to redline on cruise. I will update you with some more facts, thank you for all the help.

Oh boy! My own vehicles all have cruise and in one rare mistake I bumped shifter into neutral while using cruise and engine went far beyond a safe rpm for no load. I caught that in a split second and nothing happened but I'm certain it would have blown the engine up! That was a 1977 LTD with no system to stop overreving. Some cars will limit revs but it's still too close for comfort.
The question will come up as to how that happened. My case it was my fault period with no mechanical failure on the car's part. I doubt that's the case with your situation. The "pop" could have been something that allowed trans fluid to empty and would then behave for a while like neutral. If that's the case the trans would now show low on fluid or near no fluid when drained as most cars you would check level with engine running which you can't right now.
Stuff happens even with the best of intentions. Hope all play fair with this,
