YEAR: 1998 MAKE: CHEVY MODEL: GMC K1500 SIERRA 4X4 ENGINE: 5.7 L MILEAGE: 206,286 My truck's volt gauge started reading between 9 and 14 two days ago. The truck would turn over but seemed to be cranking over really slowly like the battery was dying. Seems to be getting worse as time goes on. Replaced the battery 6 months ago along with the starter. When I got to work today, the gauge read a little above 9. I turned the truck off, waited a second and then tried turning it over again. All I heard was the starter clicking. Could it be the alternator going? Thanks, mjgzep83

At the miles this could be a few things but 9-14 is ok if the 9 is while cold cranking. It really should never drop below about 13 while running - everything on. Get yourself a real volt meter and with a helper watch the voltage at the battery and also other ends of battery cables - engine block anywhere for the test - at starter solenoid best It's on top of the starter - for that matter you can use a power port/cig lighter. What may be happening is the side post cable ends at battery may not be letting enough thru them. Fairly common even when they look OK at a glance. Cleaning the other ends at starter and engine AND grease them as corrosion is involved you can snap the nut on starter solenoid and they aren't cheap! Don't let this go too long as if low voltage is struggling with starting it is hard on the starter which is why the solenoid at lower than enough amps will give you that machine gun sound to save starter. 1 more: When running and not changing anything electrical volts should stay pretty steady - if not you may have an alternator problem, T

Thanks for kind words. If not myself - other high end techs are here - you can do it with know how and we should be able to say how. Laugh - that's what we get paid for - NOT! T
