03 eclipse engine/power issue

Today I went to start my 03 mitsubishi eclipse. When I started it, for the first 5-10 seconds the car idled as normal. Then the RPM plummeted, the front of the car made a loud grinding noise, and the power flickered. Then it went back to idling for another 5ish seconds before doing it again. After talking to someone, I was told to take it out of park, put it in reverse, back up a moment, put it in drive, pull up a moment, then put it in park again. The theory was that somehow something got misaligned. I know nothing about vehicles, so I tried it and it worked. The car idled as normal, I drove it around the block a couple times, and there were no issues. When I tried to start it again tonight to run an errand, it started doing the noise/power loss/etc again. Any experience with any of this? I'm hoping its a small issue somehow :(

Check engine light on? Since you have no knowledge in vehicle repair, you should have your mechanic check it out. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Check engine light is not on. Yeah, I figure I'll have to do that eventually. Was hoping someone had a ballpark idea of what it could be though so I could have a bit of knowledge heading in.

Can you record/video what is going on and then upload it to a video hosting site and then post the link in here? Maybe seeing and hearing it may give some clues? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

After talking to someone, I was told to take it out of park, put it in reverse, back up a moment, put it in drive, pull up a moment, then put it in park again. The theory was that somehow something got misaligned. What did that guy do for a living? Landscaper, fisherman, Janitor? I wouldn't ask him for any further advice. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
