Was driving to pick my fiancee up from work, the battery light came on, and a few minutes later it started to make a squealing noise, smoke, and run hot. As I started to pull into the parking lot, the power steering became tight. We have left the jeep in the parking lot as I don't want to drive it. Any idea what this could be?

Sounds like the belt came apart, possibly due to one of the components freezing up. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Any possibility it could be transmission related? My fiancee is worried that that is a possibility.

No. I meant to look but, I was more worried about getting inside and informing my fiancee and figuring out how we were going to get our animal to the vet for its appointment. I wouldn't know what I was looking for anyway. I am a computer tech. Don't know the first thing about cars. I can change oil and tires, that's about it.

Then there's not a lot of point in asking questions here if you can't do anything with the advice anyway. A shredded belt should be pretty obvious. It may take a little more knowledge to find the reason it happened though.

That would be like someone asking what is wrong with their computer after it started smoking and turned off by itself before letting you look at it. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
