VW Lupo starting problem Sign In

Hello everyone,

I've got a Volkswagen Lupo FSI from the year 2001. The engine is a 1.4 and it has run 123000 kilometers. The problem is that it sometimes doesn't start at one try. Sometimes it starts by turning the key at first attempt. But if it doesn't start I have to press the gas pedal at the next attempt, or else it will just make the cracking noise. Also when the engine is hot the starting makes a very strange noise. Almost like this but bit higher and louder:

Thanks for your attention

I'm not familiar with this motor, but I'd be checking the fuel system first. The Vw fsi motor is one of the few direct injection gasoline motors around ( fuel stratified Injection). Theyre Built like a high pressure common rail deisel with spark plugs.

You'll need to check your injection pressure at the rail. Lower than rated pressure is either your fuel pressure control valve, or the pump itself going. A leak down test will let you know if your fuel system is holding pressure, but excessive leakage could be at several different spots..I'd be expecting to find something with this test.

They're verry complex motors, and beyond this you really Need a diagnostic computer with the correct program to run tests on them.

You'll have to look up pressure and leak down specs, and find a pressure gauge with the right fittings

One other thing. There is likely enough pressure in the fuel rail to severely injure yourself. (Look up injection Injuries)

know what your doing before you open up any lines. The pressures won't be as nearly high as on a diesel, but will still be enough to inject you with gasoline. Something that feels like a pin prick, but could cost you arm.
