i have a 1995 pontiac grand am 2.3l 87000 miles. at times engine will miss and shut down at red light. other times while driving. while in park when i accelerate it and hold it it will start missing like if it is running for around 5 seconds and shutting off for one secound. i dont know if its a fuel problem or electrical. the code it shows is code 19 which states that " 7X reference signal problem. ECM has detected either too many or too few pulses between sync signal within 4 minutes ". can someone tell me what this means. thanks, John

You could have a crank sensor problem but this engine has a lot of failures of the plastic coil housing that will act like that. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

You can't check either one of those things without just trying known good one on it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

you can check those housings. there are four pins in the inside from the coils and four on the outside for the plugs. one pin should have 0 resistance with one of the outside pins. when they are bad they ussally have 0 ohms with the one they are meant to be, and will have continuity with another one at a higher ohm reading but it will still not be OL. a little hard to explain but they fail by firing two cyl at once.

Although that method may find an occasional failure, it is not thorough by any means. It is very easy to have crossfiring without actual contact that would never show up with an ohmmeter. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

well after i changed the crank sensor which wasnt the problem a freind of mine had a 2.3 scrapped engine and i swapped the coil housing complete with ecm. i also changed the map sensor swapped the throttle body which i cleaned and i added 6 gal of gas with one can of sea foam. one of the above fixed the code 19 and the motor works great.thank you for your input. john.
