After starting the engine, what returns the key from
start to run position.
Ignition switch? Ignition Lock? something else?

The ignition switch will be spring loaded for the "start" portion of it.

Your key cylinder might also stop that spring from doing it's job too if it starts to bind. If you turn the key in the ON position there is a pin on the botton of the housing that will release the key cylinder.. pull out and try turning they key in the cylinder, should be no resistance.
