hello i have a 1987 cougar it will crank but not start. i have tried every thing i know to try.i tried ignition switch ignition mod. relays. checked fuseable links.fuel pressure.it has good fire it cranks over but is not getting gas i was told to reset antitheft but im not sure how to reset can anybody help please?????

What if anything brought this on? No fuel pressure or priming of pump could be a reset button in trunks of that vintage or too common to me is the pump relay if original should show a green skirt underhood. If that sometimes a light whack with the plastic end of a screwdriver will kick it to but replace it right away if that works. Alarm or anti-theft? Factory or aftermarket something? T

its factory antitheft sytem. i put anew relay on it.fuel pump is pumping good good pressure and plenty of gas at injectors. i checked it has power and gas at injectors.it wont even hit if i spray starting fluid in it.its got good fire at the plugs looks like it would at least hit or backfire.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment. If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money. Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for. These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause. 1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on. 2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on. 3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off. 4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test. Which engine? If it doesn't run when you spray it, you either have a spark or mechanical problem. I'd start with compression testing. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

it has a 3.8 69000 miles good comp on all cylinders could the factory antitheft system cause this?thanks for any info.

That was fast if time stamp is close! What were the compression reading and what did the plugs look like? Wet with fuel? You said you sprayed in throttle body and had spark - now with compression truly OK it should have at least pharted or something? T

i had them check comp on it they said each cylinder was running between 95 to 100

does anyone know how to reset the factory antitheft system on this crazy thing??????? im willing to try anything at this point.

95 to 100 for compression is too low suggesting valve timing is off. Whoever did this test so fast should have noted that. Probably an OE nylon cam gear by age never mind any miles. Plugs would be wet and engine crank too easily or watch with a valve cover off turning the crank by crank bolt and see how far it travels back and forth for a valve to move. Bet it looks like this and need to go there to verify............... If in peices the peices in oil pan should be removed if in fact this proves to be the problem,
