I own a 1999 mercury sable with 148000 miles on it. I recently noticed a wobble in the front end when braking, thinking it was a warped rotor, I jacked up the front end and pulled the tires off. Neither rotor was warped. I started the car and put it in drive(I know, not really safe) to see how everything was looking. When I put on the brakes, the driver side assembly moved in quite a bit. I also noticed the engine twist which is why the driver side moved. Now I know the engine is rubber mounted, but the movement seems very excessive. The passenger side front suspension doesn't move. The tie rods seem good, both inner and outer, although the inner on on the drivers side has allittle play to it nothing excessive. Understandable with the amount of engine twisting that is going on. The CV joints seem ok. My question is: should the engine twist that much? Are the motor mounts bad, or am I over looking something here? I'm a recently dislocated worker who is somewhat mechanically inclined but thanks to outsourcing, on a budget. So any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I could see it now. HT thought you were going to say you eyeballed it...LOL If possible you need to have someone watch the engine mounts while the engine is brake torqued. The one that usually goes first is the one on the front near the radiator. Or you can get underneath and use a large pry bar to move the engine around to see if there are any mounts broken. If you read the post I jacked it up and I noticed when I would brake the driverside front tire would move in. I saw the engine would twist which would make the front tire to move eradically which probably make it wobble at higher speed. Was wondering if any one heard of that. It seems as if the transaxle mount is bad, which is on the driverside. Would make sense.

No, that would have to be the entire subframe shifting for that to happen. When I step on it the engine doesn't twist, only when the wheels are turning and I hit the brakes.
