peugeot 407 clutch problem!! Sign In

Hi,

I have recently bought a 05 Peugeot 407 2 ltr with 61000 km on it. The problem if it is a problem is that the clutch is engaging very late. nearly at the very end of the upswing of the pedal. Is this normal. Im used to driving fords and toyotas and they engage much more smoothly and earlier! The clutch doesn't seem to give much bite to play with ! Is this normal and is it possible to get the clutch adjusted on a 407. Someone told me that it cant be done!

Help needed!!

Hi - don't know this specific car at all but that doesn't really matter as the principles of how a clutch works is common to most vehicles.

You must have an area of freeplay up top or clutch can wear itself out by "riding" itself during accelleration. The high feel you are describing is common to a worn out clutch which still can engage full forces but worn to near end of usable life.

It's probably hydraulic linkage and you need to investigate at the trans end if there's a provision for adjustment - some don't adjust but if it can, get yourself some freeplay at the top - 1/2 to 1 inch is about right for many vehicles.

Do what you can for adjustment if possible at all and I think you may find you need a new clutch to really get its behaviour back to where it should be,

Thanks or the info Tom much appreciated mate! I might have to get someone to have a look at it. Ive driven other peugeot 407s and the clutch is definitely engaging earlier. I have also been told that each car (of the same model) can be different but think ill have to investigate further!
