I own a 1974 plymouth valiant 225 904 auto my problem is the tranny will not go into park.I first replaced the shifter bushings and readjusted but even with the shifter complerely un hooked it will not go into park. When i manually rotate the shift lever coming from the tranny case with my hand i can feel it rotating freely (20 to 30 degrees) before it "catches". Can i access the internal shift mechanism without pulling the valve body? What type of mechanism is used ? is this a regular problem with these trannies ? i just dont know what to expect i am a fairly good mechanic but no tranny man any help would be appreciated

There is a lever called a "parking pawl" that flips and locks into gears on the output shaft. If I remember correctly, I think you can access this by just removing the tailshaft housing and then you should be able to see what the problem is. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Here's a picture I found. You can see the gear next to the housing.
