2 weeks ago my battery went out on me,autozone tested and said it was bad which was normal,it was a few yrs old. I went and had the battery replaced, before I did my car ran fine,no problems. Then it said it was misfiring so I replaced the spark plugs today, runs alittle better but still puttering alittle and now when I turn my defroster on it idles really low then dies....please help!![:/]

If it drives along OK then you may be fine. If battery was replaced or from totally dead it could have to relearn the state of the vehicle and should snap to with several warm ups from cold and miles if smooth driving and no check engine light staying on.

If not smooth running driving along the codes should be taken to see what item or area is in trouble,

The battery wasn't dead when I changed it but it needed replaced, after being replaced and drove for a few minutes the check engine light came on. I had someone diagnose it and it told me the same thing the person who changed my battery said, that the spark plugs were misfiring. So I had them all changed today, car runs alittle better but still the putter at take off and when the a/c is turned on it idles then will die.

When battery was changed or disconnected for any reason was a memory saver used? Did you have to reset clock and radio settings? If so it messed it up either something to be fixed or just that the computer is trying to relearn. A/C gets kicked on with windshield defrost and RWD is a real load on alternator dragging idle down too and isn't properly compensated for yet but might soon or not.

The CEL coming on so quickly means there's a hard code to be read. Get that code for starters. If running lousy as said while going along you'll add cat converters to your list to fix.

Lesson. Don't (can't always help it) let battery fail nor disconnect one improperly and the newer the vehicle the more headaches,

Clean the throttle body and your stalling and low idling will disappear. When you disconnect the battery the PCM's idle learn is lost.

Looks like the idle problem is taken care of....

In the future, if on this (or any car) you need to disconnect the battery, a memory saver should be used. It will save all memories so all the learned adaptives don't change and the car "acts" the same as it did before & hey the time is right!! & all your radio stations are still there too....Wink

But on this model, blend & temp actuators also do a "relearn" and since the gears are plastic, the older ones will break sometimes on the relearn, creating a whole new problem...

Going off of what happened and since there were no other problem. The most common problem would be a dirty throttle plate. Of course this doesn't mean that 2 different things could've happened at the same time.

This should be a fly by wire set up with no throttle cable. They can be a little harder to clean. You can turn the key on & have someone step on the throttle & the plate should open so it can be cleaned (keep your fingers out of there). It's important to clean the bore & the edges of the plate. I wouldn't suggest manually pushing the plate to open it if you haven't worked with these before, it is possible to damage it. So if you've already got the bore & plate cleaned and it's still acting up then go get the codes pulled and post them here. Also post all the info of the vehicle. engine size, 2 or 4WD, mileage, etc.

There really isn't too many vacuum hoses on this but take a quick listen for any hissing noises to see if one got popped off....

Subject: #PIT3116A: Engine Stalls When Air Conditioning Is
Turned On At Idle - keywords HVAC rough condition

Models: 2004-2007 Buick Rainier
2002-2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer and Trailblazer EXT
2002-2007 GMC Envoy, Envoy XL and Envoy XUV
2002-2004 Oldsmobile Bravada
2005-2007 Saab 97x

Condition/Concern:

Engine may stall with the air-conditioner on and or while adding additional loads to the engine at idle. An example of an addition load would be turning the steering wheel left or right with the air-conditioning on. This type of stall usually occurs during idle or slow parking lot maneuvers. This concern may not set any diagnostic trouble codes.
Recommendation/Instructions:

Clean the throttle body bore and the throttle valve plate using a clean shop towel with GM top engine cleaner, GM P/N XXXXXXX (Canadian P/N 993026) or AC-Delco Carburetor Tune-Up Conditioner, P/N X66-P, or an equivalent product.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance.

Sometimes you have to take them off and clean them really good. You can move the throttle plate with your fingers with the ignition turned off. Feel for binding when opening and closing the throttle plate. Tooth brush works really good for cleaning them.

Reset the memory in the PCM and see if it takes after cleaning the TB.

If you have a check engine light on, you should find out what code(s) is being stored as Sid stated. Usually a dirty TB won't cause misfiring. If the idle is really low, the PCM can cycle the compressor on and off and it might set a low idle code (P0506).

Code P301 is being pulled when diagnosed..is it a bad coil?

Swap #1 coil with #2 coil and see if the miss moves. If you get a P0302, then you know there is something up with the coil. If the miss stays in the same cylinder, swap spark plugs with #2 and check to see if the miss moves. Let us know what you find out.

Just because the code says #1 is missing doesn't mean the coil in number one is the problem. Misfiring can be caused by more than just the coil and you should do a thing called "diagnosing the problem" to be sure that the part your replacing is bad.

If you go and just replace the coil because the computer is telling you the cylinder is skipping, you'll just be wasting money and time if the coil isn't really the problem.

It might not fix anything, but will give you more pieces to play with when trying to solve this puzzle. When you or they go to swap the coils around, inspect the coil boot for spark leaks.

Frown changed the #1 coil and still no help, very frustrating buying a 70$ part that didn't help. Plz help I don't know what else to fix. Should I clean out my fuel injector/filter?would that help :(

Why did you change the coil? Did you determine it was bad by swapping it with another cylinders coil? Unimpressed

Well, if you still have a miss in #1 your going to have to check the injector to see if it is firing. If you know the injector is firing, you will then have to test the injector flow rate compared to the other injectors. If the injector passes, you could have a mechanical problem in that cylinder.

I changed the coil because the code said to change spark plugs/then coil then check vacuum leaks or fuel injector. Could a dirty fuel filter cause the problem? Or if I reset my computer will it fix the problem,I only started having problems when the battery was replaced :(

The code didn't tell you to change those things.

The code can show up if there is a problem in one or more of those things. To find out which thing it is, you have to test that thing to see if the thing is bad. That is why you should have swapped the coils to see if the miss would have moved. If the miss didn't move, then you would have known the coil wasn't the problem. Your going to have to have those other things tested that I typed in the post above to see which thing is causing your problem.

Normally a dirty/restricted fuel filter won't cause a single cylinder misfire.

I just had the same problem with my 04 trailblazer, had to replace my fan clutch...this fixed the hard idle and stalling with the ac on, also my ac actuator went out.. I noticed this after replacing my battery, cold air was going out the defroster and floor vents.. all in the same day..

Jason, while nice to hear this worked for you, the rules posted in the top of this and all sections tell you not to post to old threads. Every time you post to a thread, an e-mail notification goes out to everyone that ever posted to it. Gets to be a pain. I realize you are new and didn't know. This man posted about the issue 9 months ago. His woman could've had a baby by then. Please do not respond to old posts and read through the rules posted at the top of the forum.

Best wishes and glad you have found this site. Let us know when issues develop for your vehicles or those you work on.
