05 PT Cruiser Problem

I have a 05 PT cruiser Turbo. It just went over 50K miles. 2 wks ago, I was doing about 75 mph in cruise control. It suddenly cut out like it was out of gas, but I still had 3/4 tank of 87 octane gas. It slowed to 60 and regained power. Check engine light came on and stayed on. It would not go faster than 60 at that point. I went to the next gas station and put in a bottle of STP and filled up with 91 octane gas. It went for another 160 miles with no problem. However, the engine light stayed on. About 8 hours later, the engine light was off. The next day it drove fine with no problem. The following week, I drove it for about 50 miles and it did the same thing again. I topped off with premium gas and it ran fine for another 50 miles. Then it acted up again with exact same problem, even at low speed. It would sputter and shake, and gas cutting out. I once again topped off with premium gas and ran fine for another 50 miles. Dealer wants $200 just to read the code. Is there a less expensive way to fix this problem? Should I just change the plugs? Should I just drain the tank and use Premium gas from now on?

Codes are readily available for no charge. AutoZone is one I see many others too. Not sure why octant rating is making any difference in this case.

autozone is a juke they need too stop reading codes because they give people fulse hope when they check the engine light. they need to be trained so they give out the right information too the customer.

Can be true! Get another place and a printout of results. You had multiple posts and this got messed up with wrong year replied to so this may all be gone on the forum. Forgot which one I left intact,

Agree with Tom; Only a couple of things come to mind; Loss of fuel pressure...contaminants in tank, restricted filter, fuel pump; Catalytic converter...broken up internally partially blocking off exhaust. When you stop to refuel, the restriction falls away and good to go again. Both rather rare, but just a thought. Get the codes retrieved and post them.

I took it to Pep Boys and they read the code for free. It says 340, cam light sensor. I did other research and it appeared that when the cam sensor is not working properly, it causes the cam shaft to rotate out of sync and end up in a limp mode. The RPM would not go over 2500, hence it would not allow me to go over 65 mph. Pep Boys wants $300 to replace the cam sensor, hoping that's the only problem... The question: Is this a common problem with PT Cruiser? Should there be a recall?

Aaron; P0340 is for the cam sensor/circuit and does need to be addressed, but I doubt that it is causing your problem.
The cam sensor 'sees' the camshaft rotation, sends this information to the PCM, then distributes fuel accordingly (SFI). I've never seen a cam sensor cause a noticeable drivability issue. Generally, the customer doesn't notice anything, other than a slight drop in fuel economy. Yes, get the P0340 corrected, but probably should expect more diagnostics. I could be wrong.

I have an 04 cruiser, and the exact same thing is happening to me. I recently noticed that the cruise control will not turn on when this problem occurs.
