1992 mustang gt wont start Sign In

1992 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 roughly 170000 miles on car and maybe 20000 miles on motor.
The car ran great and then i let it sit for three months and it wouldnt start. After messing with it the fuel pump came on and the car would start and run but the relay is bad so wouldnt always come on. I have changed fuel filter, pressure regulator, control mod, dist cap and rotor, coil. I added an inline pump to the car due to not knowing where the fuel pump relay is. When i the intank pump comes on now it wont pressurize. Even with both pumps on the car wont start and it sounds like i have fuel going through my return lines. when i crank the car over i have spark but the injectors r bone dry. Do u have any ideas of what i can do to get this running?
Thanks shane

ok so i just went out disconnected my battery for awhile. after reconnecting it i turned the key the in tank pump came on didnt pressurize so i cycled it 3 times and the relay quit working so i flipped my switch to run it off the battery and tried to start it and it didnt so i tried real quick right after that and it fired and is running. great throttle response and idling great. the fuel pressure bleeds off when its off is that normal? what could cause the car to start randomly? does resetting the computer help? tried a restart and nothing. what could be wrong????????

you said you have gas going through the return line but the injectors are bone dry, have you checked to see if your getting power to the injectors you could try cleaning the connectors on the injectors if your getting power to them. just a thought hope it helps.

It's really not a good idea to add an inline pump. On this system, if there is a fuel problem, it really needs to be found & fixed and kept factory......

If it's not running 1st you find out if you have spark & fuel........ It sounds like you have narrowed it down to fuel... To be totally sure, you should spray some carb clean or starting fluid down the throttle plate and make sure the engine will start.

Then you need to put a gauge on the fuel rail and check pressure, you should be in the 30 lb psi range. If not, that needs to be fixed 1st, whether it's changing the in tank pump, relay, inertia switch, whatever it is, it needs to be fixed correctly...
Then if it's still not starting, as already suggested, you need to check injector pulse.......

Most of those older Fords have hard plastic fuel lines so I'm almost afraid to ask how you added an inline pump, but if you cut up a line, then that is going to have to be fixed as well.......

i replaced the the fuel lines. my next question is if i disconnect my battery and wait a couple hours the car will start once and the system pressurizes fine. so im thinkin its more electrical. does the fuel pump relay have anything to do with the car not starting even if i have the proper fuel pressure? and i keep hearing the relay is under the driver seat but i dont see one under there and i have the electronic seat does that make a difference?

No the relay is to power the pump.....

When it's not starting you need to check pressure, if the pressure is good then something else is missing.

Then you need to check for spark and injector pulse while it's not starting. If the pressure is good while it's not starting the problem is somewhere else.............

You could spray some starting fluid down the throttle body went it isn't starting, if it runs on that then you know it's not an ign problem......

ok if i let it sit with battery disconnected over night or for several hours itll fire fine. today im gonna see how long it has to sit before itll restart. i have spark when it doesnt fire and pull a plug and itll be dry when its not starting so im still on it not pressurizing but the wholw will start after disconnecting the battery makes me think electrical.

Yes you need to see whats missning.....Just a guess from what you posted, it sounds like it may be your injector pulse. You should get a noid light and check for pulse the next time it won't start.

Like I mentioned before I would hit it with some carb clean to make sure it will start during the failure, I'm sure it probably will but its nice to know for sure so you don't head off down the wrong path..........
